The historic Swann Hotel, a Main Street attraction in Jasper, Texas, for more than a century, was originally built in 1901 by Mr. A. L. Dunkin as his family home. It was purchased in 1915 by Mrs. Mahala Swann, a widow and mother of six girls, and established as a hotel. Mrs. Swann began the hotel's tradition of warm Southern accommodations mixed with the finest East Texas home cooking, a custom that she continued until her death in 1950. The hotel then passed to Mahala's daughter, Eugenia, who carried on the family business, as well as its traditions of Southern hospitality and fine food. Miss Genie, as she was known around town, soon became the unofficial hostess of Jasper. A devout member of the Methodist Church and many local civic clubs, Ms. Genie devoted much of her life to continuing and enhancing the reputation of the Swann Hotel.The current owner purchased the hotel in 2000, and immediately began restoring it to its past beauty. The Swann Hotel now stands ready to once again provide the finest accomodations for the modern East Texas traveller. As you approach the front door, you are soothed by the pleasant
gardens and profusion of floral colors that surround the graceful
front porch. Adjoining the parlor is a music room, complete with a grand piano.
The piano is open to visitors with a talent to play and for others
to enjoy.
